Barolo 2014, a very recognisable vintage

With this post, we present our 2014 Barolos. Considered by many to be a “minor” vintage compared with warmer, sunnier years like 2010 or 2012, in reality, 2014 reserves some pleasant surprises.

With this post, we present our 2014 Barolos. Considered by many to be a “minor” vintage compared with warmer, sunnier years like 2010 or 2012, in reality, 2014 reserves some pleasant surprises.

Careful thinning and consistency of quality

After having carefully evaluated and tried to understand the seasonal pattern, we did some damage control with careful green harvesting and targeted thinning. The aim of the operations in the vineyard was to limit the quantity of bunches produced by the vines in order to concentrate the plants’ vital energy in those remaining and consequently, the quality of the fruit harvested.

Barolo La Serra 2014 and Barolo Brunate 2014 will be available from January 2018

Marcarini’s commitment  to consistency of quality. Also in potentially abundant years from the point of view of quantity, we prefer to act in the interest of quality, deliberately decreasing yields to harvest only the best fruit.  We ensured an excellent harvest through thinning, even though it reduced the harvest by 30%, to which a further 10% loss was added due to the hailstorm in July.

What kind of Barolo does 2014 give us?

We come to the Barolo 2014, available from mid-January of next year. Tastings indicate a vintage with a pronounced identity. Wines endowed with a slightly inferior complexity compared to the “classic” vintages, but well-balanced, extremely elegant and with a notable balance between flavour and aromas – Barolos that will stand out for finesse and inherent aromas.

A ready, “personal” vintage

2014 will be a vintage with a distinct, unequivocal personality, which can be appreciated by experts and occasional drinkers alike. On one hand, connoisseurs will be able to make comparisons, trying to describe the particular features and differences. On the other, novices will have a pleasant surprise – the 2014 Barolos will present themselves in an extremely agreeable guise, thanks to their easy drinkability as soon as they go on sale. So it will not be necessary to wait for them to stay for years in the bottle to enjoy and recognise the 2014 Barolos – despite being young, they will offer emotions very similar to much longer- aged bottles.
